In 1930s Munich, danger lurks behind dark corners, and secrets are buried deep within the city. But Gretchen Müller, who grew up in the National Socialist Party under the wing of her "uncle" Dolf, has been shielded from that side of society ever since her father traded his life for Dolf's, and Gretchen is his favorite, his pet.
Uncle Dolf is none other than Adolf Hitler.
And Gretchen follows his every command.
Until she meets a fearless and handsome young Jewish reporter named Daniel Cohen. Gretchen should despise Daniel, yet she can't stop herself from listening to his story: that her father, the adored Nazi martyr, was actually murdered by an unknown comrade. She also can't help the fierce attraction brewing between them, despite everything she's been taught to believe about Jews.

As Gretchen investigates the very people she's always considered friends, she must decide where her loyalties lie. Will she choose the safety of her former life as a Nazi darling, or will she dare to dig up the truth—even if it could get her and Daniel killed?
17668473Nail-bitingly captivating and compelling, this novel will put you under arrest and hold you there until you are completely finished. The cover is stunning, it tells a story on its own though I do prefer the American cover.
Gretchen Muller is known to many as one of Uncle Dolf's favourites. She is what he refers to as the perfect teenage girl. Though when dangers and violence become more apparent, Gretchen finds herself venturing out of the safety of her home into a more dark and secretive place to find out what truly happened to her Father. But the one thing she doesn't expect, is a forbidden romance on its way.
Gretchen is a character who is clouded by expectations and order; she cannot be herself. This is one of the aspects I most enjoyed about her character, like many we got to see her true personality with no hiding, she was a strong and wilful protagonist whom was intelligent and whose opinions were not clouded by others judgement; she looked out for all. Her brother was one of the main focuses in this novel, how he had become whom he was is still a slight mystery though it is left open for the reader to make their own judgements. Daniel Cohen was, what one might say, the voice of truth. He knew exactly what was going on and was clever and intelligent; Gretchen and Daniel's relationship is essentially of forbidden love however it was clear they fit each other perfectly from the very beginning.

The historical aspect of this novel was truly engaging, events were mapped out effectively and you were never confused, though I must confess a lot of the time I was saying "I know who it is!" or "COME ON!!!", however with this novel this aspect fit perfectly as you got to see and experience how the mystery was uncovered; it was not rushed or unrealistic.

The plot was truly gripping, many a time was I desperately not wanting to turn the page in fright of what I might read, but at the same time I wanted to devour it! This was a novel where emotions ran high but the mystery, young forbidden love and adventure were not taken over. A historical, romance novel at it's best; it is one of my favourites so far of 2014!
