Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t write, but growing up, I never thought that being a writer was an actual career that I could pursue.
When I was in university, I ended up getting an M.A. in Film Theory (the world’s most useless degree and source of shame to my mother) but figured I could parlay it into writing about cinema from the proverbial ivory tower. I quickly realized I didn’t want to do that at all.
So then I started a ’zine. That wasn’t the right format for my writing, either. By this point, I was dating my future husband who was a filmmaker. It seemed a natural thing to teach myself screenwriting so that I could write movies for him to direct. Simple, right?
I ended up working professionally as a screenwriter for twelve years. It was an amazing ride and I’m so blessed to have done it. But the itch to write novels never went away. When the industry went into decline, I decided that now was the time to combine my loves of YA and romantic comedy and see if I could write a novel. The result was Sam Cruz’s Infallible Guide to Getting Girls and I haven’t stopped. I love it.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Does “obsessing” count? I'm not one of those people who has a set regiment of number of hours or words per day. In the early stages, my process consists of lots of thinking–about plot, character, theme, all that goodness. And scrawling notes on random pieces of paper that pile up. Eventually I turn those into a loose outline. And from there, I begin my first draft. I find the deeper I get into the story, the more my writing time increases until I'm scowling at my family for their audacity in wanting clean clothes and food, because all I want to do all day is write. I also play a lot of Suduko once I start writing, because it helps me figure out story problems.

Where do you get your ideas or inspiration for your characters?

Anything can set me off. A line of dialogue that comes to me. A story I’ve heard.  My Ex From Hell came out of a combination of my tween daughter insisting that if I was going to spend all my time at a computer that it better be for a book she could read and the fact that I missed Buffy. NOT that I think for a second I come close to the genius of Joss Whedon. I just wanted to spend time with a mouthy, kick ass girl, whose teen life had gotten supernaturally more complicated.

What books have most influenced your life?

I’m not sure I could pick specific books, but I can definitely pick specific authors: Oscar Wilde for his scathing wit, Dr. Seuss for his magical possibilities, Salman Rushdie for his wordplay, J.D. Salinger for the beauty of how he brings characters to life, Jennifer Crusie for romantic comedy banter and Karen Marie Moning for original spins on tried and true mythology coupled with amazing sexual tension.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read, watch excellent television, tap dance, have dinner parties, and laugh at absurd and often inappropriate things with my family. And travel. Whenever I can, I love to run away to a foreign country and be totally unplugged. And read more.

Any future writing news you would like to share?

My Life From Hell, the final book in The Blooming Goddess Trilogy will be coming out in 2014. Once I have this series wrapped up, I want to go back to writing for an older YA crowd. I'm playing around with an idea for a 5 book fantasy romantic comedy series, where each book would have its own set of lovers but with an overarching battle through all the books.

YA romantic comedy author because her first kiss sucked and she's compensating.
